Dee Hibbert-Jones is an Academy Award nominated, Emmy® award winning filmmaker and artist. She works collaboratively with Nomi Talisman on film, new media and fine art projects that examine power and politics: the regulation of behavior and the blinding cover of privilege. Looking at what is considered valuable and who is dismissed as valueless.
Hibbert-Jones’ short film, installation and art projects have been exhibited world-wide, broadcast on Netflix and screened at national and international film festivals, museums and galleries. She has received award commissions, grant awards and invitations to exhibit in international art festivals, film festivals, museums and galleries in the US, UK, Austria, Czech Republic, Israel and Japan.
She was awarded the Filmmaker Award with Talisman from the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke (2015) created to honor and support documentary filmmakers who connect to the power of the documentary tradition and whose works are potential catalysts for education and change. In 2016 she was awarded the Gideon award for support to indigent minorities and the Congressional Black Caucus Veterans Braintrust Award. Her festival awards include: Best Short, Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, Best Short Documentary Hamptons International Film Festival, Golden Strands Award, Outstanding Documentary Short, Tall Grass KS, Best Experimental Short, Atlanta Docufest, Best Animation Bar Harbor Film Festival, Honorary Mention for Best Animated Documentary Short, Dok Leipzig, Best Experimental Short, Atlanta Docufest, Impact Award (In) Justice for All, and the 2015 Platinum Award Winner Spotlight Documentary Series.
Her most recent animated documentary film Last Day of Freedom co-directed with Talisman won Best Short Documentary at the International Documentary (IDA) Awards 2015 and was nominated for an 88th Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Subject.
Hibbert-Jones is a Guggenheim Fellow, a MacDowell Colony Fellow, and a Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Fellow and Headlands Center for the Arts Alumni. She is an Associate Professor of Art a Digital Art New Media at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where she founded and now co-directs the Social Practice Arts Research Center at UCSC, a social and environmental research center
